Sorry, I just don’t get it. The concept of reformulating and ressurecting old beer recipes is noble, and can produce some excellent beers. There’s some I’ve heard about that I’m dying to try, and some that I’ve tried that really justify the question of: WHY?
Theobroma is a beer based on an ancient recipe which is apparently laden with spices but in this case comes across as a mediocre somewhat dark Pilsener, smacking of common Lager taste, with a light soup of herbs somewhat highlighting a cloudy, muted version of Cocoa. Some other spices are present, maybe. WHY?
Yes, this beer boasts a high ABV (10% or so) for it’s drinkability, and if you’re looking to get fucked up while drinking something “interesting,” I could see how you would go for this. But with so many other better beers (including several by the very brewer of this beer) that could teach you so much more, the question of WHY just doesn’t stop ringing in my head…
