This past weekend my girlfriend and I drove down to Maryland to attend an outdoor wedding in the swamp. It was hot. When we got home our cat was cooking a fried egg on my beer drinking chair and I ran immediately to the fridge and grabbed a cold Coal Porter out. A lot of people will get all freaked about drinking black beer in an apartment that’s about 170 Fahrenheit. I’m thinking now that a low alcohol brew with a little bit of residual sugar might be just the thing after baking in the heat for 48 hours. The low alcohol keeps it as refreshing as a lager and the tannins and residual sugar provide some vital nutrition.
I drank both straight from the bottle (I’ve been using a pint glass for the rest of the beers in the roundup) so I can’t really talk about the nose on either of them. Both had a pleasant amount of residual sweetness, not cloying but definitely present. The Coal Porter was a bit richer and more on the chocolate side of the malt spectrum, where as the Stovepipe was more balanced between coffee and chocolate. The body on both was also similar, medium-light, with light carbonation. Great beers after a sweaty weekend and beers I will look forward to drinking again in the future.
