Lakefront in Milwaukee is one of the more venerable US craft breweries. They’ve been around since 1987 and made one of the first organic beers, an ESB. It pours a lovely amber and has some nice floral hop character on the nose. They consider it an English style ESB and I have to agree, very little hop character with a bit of caramelly malt. It does finish a bit sweet and I think I may have drank an older bottle as I would have expected a bit more bite on the finish. Body was a little bigger than a true English ESB but that only makes it a better introduction to the style for American palettes.
It’s all the more impressive considering how terrible most domestic organic beers are. Often times, in this country at least, the organic label is a charming excuse to turn out a second rate product. European breweries seem to really work hard on their organic beers, especially the Schneider brewery and Brasserie DuPont. It is good to know that one of the pioneering beers in the category is not just hype.
